How to clean an area rug at home (and when to skip the DIY)

Area rugs collect a surprising amount of dirt. They sit in high-traffic spots, absorb spills, trap pet hair, and catch everything shoes and bare feet track in. The good news is that basic rug care at home isn't complicated. A few regular habits keep most rugs in solid shape.

Vacuum both sides

Most people vacuum the top of their area rug and call it done. But dirt works its way through the fibers and settles on the backing. Flip the rug over and vacuum the back every two to three weeks. You'll be surprised how much comes out.

For the top side, vacuum at least once a week in high-traffic areas. Twice a week if you have pets. Turn off the beater bar for delicate rugs like wool or silk so it doesn't pull fibers. Use the suction-only setting or a handheld attachment.

Shake it out

For smaller rugs, take them outside and give them a good shake every couple of weeks. Hang them over a railing or clothesline and beat them with a broom handle if you want to go old-school. This knocks out the fine dust and grit that vacuuming misses.

Obviously this doesn't work for a 9x12 living room rug. But doormats, kitchen runners, and bedroom accent rugs are usually manageable. Even doing this a few times a season makes a difference.

Spot clean stains fast

When something spills on the rug, speed matters. Blot the spill immediately with a clean white cloth or paper towels. Don't scrub. Scrubbing pushes the liquid deeper and can spread the stain or damage fibers.

For most stains, mix a small amount of mild dish soap with cool water. Dip a cloth in the solution, wring it out so it's damp but not dripping, and blot the stain from the outside in. Rinse the area by blotting with a cloth dampened with plain water. Then lay a dry towel over the spot and press down to absorb the remaining moisture.

Avoid using hot water on stains. Heat can set protein-based stains like milk, blood, or pet accidents permanently.

Deal with odors

If a rug smells musty or stale, sprinkle baking soda over the entire surface and let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes. Vacuum it up thoroughly. This works well for general odors. For pet urine, baking soda won't be enough. The urine is in the fibers and often in the backing, and a surface treatment isn't reaching it.

Getting rugs outside in the sun for a few hours also helps with mild odors. UV light is a natural deodorizer. Just don't leave colored rugs in direct sunlight all day or the colors may fade.

Rotate your rugs

Traffic patterns wear rugs unevenly. Rotate area rugs 180 degrees every three to six months so the wear distributes across the whole surface instead of concentrating in one path. This is especially noticeable on rugs in hallways and living rooms where people walk the same route every day.

When professional cleaning is the better call

Home care keeps a rug looking decent, but there are situations where DIY just doesn't cut it.

Delicate fibers. Wool, silk, and vintage rugs can be damaged by the wrong cleaner or too much water. If you're not sure what the rug is made of, a professional can identify the fiber and clean it appropriately.

Deep stains. Stains that have set in over time, or stains that keep coming back after spot cleaning, usually need extraction equipment that goes deeper than a cloth and soapy water can.

Large rugs. Moving, flipping, and thoroughly cleaning a big area rug at home is a workout, and it's hard to dry evenly. Uneven drying can cause mildew in the backing.

Pet issues. Pet accidents soak through the fibers into the backing. Home spot cleaning treats the surface, but the odor source is deeper than that.

Our area rug cleaning uses a low-moisture process that's safe for all fiber types and dries fast. No over-wetting, no soap residue left behind.
